The wedding playlist
There is a shared canon, and it is remarkably stable. A wedding in Delhi, Dallas or Durban will play a substantially overlapping set of songs — which is useful, because it means you can plan for it.
Which event gets which music

The songs that turn up everywhere
Names, not lyrics — this is a spotting guide. From film: Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna and Bole Chudiyan (the Karan Johar canon, unavoidable), Kajra Re, Nagada Sang Dhol, London Thumakda, Gallan Goodiyaan, Sadi Gali, Morni Banke. For the baraat, whatever Punjabi track is current, plus perennials like Mundian To Bach Ke. For the vidaai, Babul Ki Duayen and its regional equivalents.
A Tamil or Telugu wedding runs on nadaswaram and its own film canon; a Bengali one has its own songs and the ululation (ulu-dhwani) that no playlist provides. Gujarati weddings fold in garba. Muslim weddings often centre qawwali and avoid film music at the nikah entirely. Ask the family — see regional differences.
Three practical rules. Put the guaranteed floor-fillers after dinner, not before. Keep at least a third of it music the grandparents recognise — older film songs clear the floor of nobody. And brief whoever is running the sound on the exact moment the ceremony music must take over, because that transition is the one that goes wrong.
