Muhurat and astrology: why the wedding is at 5am
If a wedding ceremony is scheduled for 5:14am, or a housewarming for a Tuesday afternoon three months away, this is why.
What a muhurat is
An auspicious window of time, calculated from the traditional almanac (panchang) using five elements of the day: the lunar day (tithi), the day of the week (vaara), the constellation the moon occupies (nakshatra), and two further calculated factors (yoga and karana). Certain combinations are favourable, some are strictly avoided.
Where it decides things
- Weddings — the pheras happen inside the window, whatever the hour. Everything else in the schedule bends around it.
- Griha pravesh — moving into a new home.
- Naming and first-rice ceremonies — see namkaran.
- Buying a car or starting a business — many families still check before signing.
- Whole seasons — some months are considered inauspicious for weddings, which is why the wedding calendar bunches into particular windows and venues sell out.
Horoscope matching
For marriages, many families compare the two birth charts — the guna milan system scores compatibility out of 36 points across eight categories, with 18 often treated as a minimum. Mangal dosha (a particular placement of Mars) is the most-discussed obstacle, and one many families now quietly ignore.
Enormously variable. Some families won't fix a date without a priest's calculation; others pick a Saturday that suits the venue and tell the relatives it was checked. Both are common, and the second is more common than anyone admits at the wedding.
