Breakfast is savoury, regional, and often the most distinctive meal of the day — a Tamil breakfast and a Punjabi one have almost nothing in common.

The weekday reality

Idli and dosa batter ferments overnight, and parathas take time — so most households keep them for weekends and eat poha, upma, bread-and-eggs or leftover roti on weekdays. Batter is also sold ready-made at every Desi grocery, which is how most people abroad manage it.
