Shoes off: why, and how strictly

Non-negotiable in almost every Desi home, and the single easiest thing a guest can get right or wrong.

Why

How strict, where

HomesUniversal. There will be a pile by the door
Temples, gurdwaras, mosquesAbsolutely required. There's a counter or rack outside
KitchenOften stricter still — some households keep separate slippers, and traditional homes may not allow outside footwear anywhere near it
Shops and officesShoes stay on
Guest notes

Wear socks you're happy to be seen in, and shoes you can slip off without sitting down. Don't ask "should I take my shoes off?" — just do it; asking puts the host in the awkward position of saying yes. If they insist you keep them on, they mean it.
