Vidaai: the farewell

After the ceremony, the bride leaves her parents' home with her husband's family. It is, deliberately, the one openly sad moment in days of celebration — and often the point at which the entire room ends up in tears.

What happens

How it's changing

Plenty of modern couples keep the ritual and drop the premise: brides who will see their parents next week, couples who leave together for their own home rather than his family's, and families who now perform a version where the groom is also formally farewelled by his side. Some skip it entirely. Others keep it precisely because the catharsis is the point.

If you're a guest

Stand back and let the family have it. This isn't a photo moment for anyone outside the immediate circle, and the kindest thing is to be quietly present rather than filming.
