Performing at a sangeet

You have been told, not asked, that you are dancing at the sangeet. This is the page for that. It is entirely doable in six weeks by people who cannot dance.

The timeline that works

6 weeks outLock the song and the group. Both get harder to change later
5 weeksChoreography set — someone in the family, a hired choreographer, or a YouTube routine learned as-is
4–2 weeksWeekly rehearsals. Aim for six or seven total; the routine should be fully learned by two weeks out
1 weekRehearse in the actual shoes and a rough version of the outfit. This is where problems surface
On the dayOne run-through in the venue if you can get the floor. Check the music plays from the actual device that will be used

Choosing the song

Making a mixed-ability group look good

The three tricks that do most of the work

Unison beats complexity. Eight people doing a simple move together looks far better than eight people doing a hard one raggedly. Use formation changes — moving from a line to a V to two rows reads as choreography even when the steps are basic. Put the confident dancers at the front corners, where everyone behind can see them and follow.

What actually goes wrong

The thing nobody tells first-timers

The audience is on your side before you start. They are your family, they have been drinking, and they will cheer a dropped step harder than a clean one. Smile at them rather than concentrating on your feet — that single change is the difference between a performance people enjoy and one they politely applaud.
