TV serials: the genre that runs the evening

For twenty-five years, the daily family serial has been the single most-watched thing in India — running six nights a week, sometimes for a decade, and shaping the evening routine of tens of millions of households.

The conventions

What it's for

It's easy to sneer at, and worth resisting. These serials are watched by extended families together, they gave a generation of women in restricted households a daily social world, and their handling of remarriage, education for daughters and domestic abuse — however melodramatic — put those conversations in living rooms that weren't having them.

What streaming changed

Everything, and not entirely. Streaming produced a wave of ambitious Indian series — crime, politics, dark comedy — aimed at a younger urban audience. But daily television serials still comfortably out-rate them nationally. The two audiences barely overlap, which is itself the story of contemporary India.
