Desi comedy: stand-up, sketch and the internet

Stand-up in India went from almost nothing to a genuine industry inside fifteen years, driven by YouTube rather than clubs — and diaspora comedy has run alongside it as its own distinct thing.

The recurring material

Two different scenes

In IndiaEnglish and Hindi stand-up in metros, sketch collectives, and an enormous regional-language scene. It operates under real constraints: comedians have faced police cases and cancelled shows over material about religion and politics
DiasporaA longer history in the UK — Goodness Gracious Me in the 1990s made "going for an English" a national reference — and a substantial North American scene that has moved well past immigrant-experience material
Why it matters more than it looks

Comedy has been the most effective vehicle for second-generation self-description there is. A lot of people first heard their own childhood articulated by a comedian, not a novelist — see second generation.
